These terms are the agreement between you and Sambulo Senda, the independent developer of the Berea iOS app ("Berea", "we", "us"). By downloading or using Berea you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the app.
This agreement is with us, not with Apple. Apple is not a party to it and is not responsible for Berea or its content.
The short version
- Berea is yours to use on your own Apple devices. We are not selling you the app itself, only the right to use it.
- The core app is free. Premium is optional, billed by Apple, and cancellable at any time from your App Store settings.
- What you write and record stays on your device. You own it; we claim no rights over it.
- The AI features can be wrong. Check them against the Bible text — that is the whole idea behind the name.
- Support questions come to us, not to Apple.
Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use Berea on any Apple-branded device that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the App Store Terms of Service. This licence covers use of the app only. It does not transfer ownership of the app or of anything in it, and it does not let you sell, rent, sub-licence, or redistribute Berea, or attempt to extract its source code or the data files it ships with.
What Berea does
Berea is a Bible reader and sermon companion. It ships with the full Bible text and works offline. Reading, searching, highlighting, note-taking, on-device chat, and Follow Along are free and require no account.
Premium
Premium is optional and unlocks two features that are otherwise unavailable: Deeper Answers (cloud-assisted chat) and Enhanced accuracy (cloud-assisted sermon transcription). Both are described in full in the privacy policy, and both stay off until you turn them on.
Premium is sold in three forms:
- Monthly — an auto-renewing subscription, billed each month.
- Annual — an auto-renewing subscription, billed each year.
- Lifetime — a single purchase, not a subscription.
Prices are shown in the app in your local currency before you buy, and vary by region. If a price changes, the change applies to future billing periods, and for a subscription Apple will ask you to agree before the increased price is charged.
How the subscriptions bill
Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase. A subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and Apple charges the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends. You can manage or cancel a subscription at any time in your Apple Account settings — cancelling stops the next renewal and leaves your access running to the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
What "Lifetime" means
Lifetime is a one-time purchase that unlocks the Premium features for as long as Berea is offered and we are able to operate it. We think that is a long time, and we intend it to be — but no independent developer can promise that an app will run forever, and we would rather say so here than imply otherwise. It is not a promise about any particular future feature, and it does not cover services we may add later that carry their own costs.
Refunds
Apple handles all payments and all refunds for App Store purchases. We cannot issue a refund ourselves. Requests go through Apple's Report a Problem page, and are decided under Apple's policies and your local consumer law. If something has gone wrong, email us anyway — we would like to know, and we can often help.
Your content
Your sermons, transcripts, notes, highlights, and conversations are yours. They are stored on your device, we operate no server that holds them, and we claim no licence or ownership over anything you create in Berea. We cannot read it, and we cannot recover it for you if you lose your device or delete the app — please keep your own backups if it matters to you.
Using Berea responsibly
You agree not to use Berea to break the law, to infringe anyone's rights, or to interfere with the app's operation or the services behind its optional features.
Recording a sermon captures another person's voice and words. You are responsible for recording only where you are permitted to — that means respecting your church's wishes, the speaker's, and any local law about recording — and for what you do with a recording afterwards.
What the AI features are, and are not
Berea's summaries, key points, questions, quizzes, transcripts, and chat replies are generated by machine-learning models, on your device or, if you enable the Premium features, through the services named in the privacy policy. They can be incomplete, misleading, or simply wrong. Transcription mishears words. Models invent references that look plausible. Treat every generated answer as a prompt to go and read the passage yourself — the Bereans in Acts 17 are commended for checking, and the app is named after them for a reason.
Nothing Berea generates is theological, pastoral, legal, financial, or medical advice, and it is not a substitute for Scripture itself, for your own study, or for the counsel of your church.
Bible text and third-party material
Berea ships three translations, all of them freely usable and all bundled inside the app:
- World English Bible — placed in the public domain by its editors.
- Berean Standard Bible — released into the public domain by its publisher.
- King James Version — in the public domain in most of the world. In the United Kingdom rights in the KJV rest with the Crown, and it is reproduced under that long-standing permission.
The optional Premium features pass data to third-party providers, named in the privacy policy. Their handling of that data is governed by their own terms and policies, which we do not control.
Availability and changes to the app
We may update, change, or discontinue features of Berea. The offline core — reading, search, notes, highlights — is the part we are most committed to keeping. The optional network features depend on third-party services and may be interrupted, changed, or withdrawn if those services are. We do not promise the app will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Support
Support and maintenance for Berea are our responsibility, not Apple's — Apple has no obligation to provide either. Email [email protected] and a real person will read it.
Warranty
Berea is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law. If the app fails to conform to any warranty that does apply, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app if you paid one. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to Berea, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty are our responsibility.
Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the consumer law of the country you live in, which we do not attempt to override.
Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of Berea, or for loss of content stored only on your device. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
Claims
We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claim by you or a third party relating to Berea or your use of it — including product liability claims, any claim that Berea fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection or similar law. We are also responsible for investigating, defending, settling, and discharging any claim that Berea or your use of it infringes a third party's intellectual property rights.
Legal compliance
You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
Apple's role
Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and on your acceptance of them Apple has the right — and is deemed to have accepted the right — to enforce them against you.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, we will update this page and revise the date above. Continuing to use Berea after a change means you accept the updated terms.
